In Season September

The abundance of fruit and vegetables from the autumn harvest means plenty of opportunity for kitchen creativity, says Beth Wicks

Blackberries
The blackberry season spans the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Fresh blackberries are simply delicious served with a little sugar and lots of cream or in comforting hot pies and puddings. Wild berries have an unrivalled depth of flavour, so search out brambles nearby in hedgerows or woodland – remember to take an umbrella for hooking branches. Full of fibre and antioxidants, these succulent berries can help protect against cancer. During World War One, children were given time off school to collect blackberries to produce juice to be sent to soldiers to help maintain their health.
